Knowledge Islands
The Model
The philosophy describes what knowledge is and why it matters. The model describes how a Knowledge Island actually works — the five operational pillars that keep it alive.
Conventions
The shared language that makes an island coherent — and interoperable with others.
Conventions are what allow an island to be understood by anyone operating within it — including its own future agents. They define how knowledge is expressed, where it lives, and what belongs on the island at all.
Notes
Format and type system: frontmatter, tags, note types, structural conventions for both machine and human readability. The grammar of knowledge on the island.
Residency
What belongs on the island versus in external systems. The boundary between a Knowledge Island and the tools it uses is a convention decision — and it must be deliberate.
Structure
Library layout: the four zones (Calendar, Pillars, Resources), routing rules for incoming knowledge, index conventions, folder naming. The map of the island.
Processes
The formal gates that govern how the island changes — and how it relates to the outside world.
Processes are what give governance its teeth. Without them, conventions are aspirational and decisions are informal. Processes make change legible, traceable, and ratifiable.
Enactment Process
The internal change mechanism. Any update to the island's conventions, structure, or governance flows through here: draft → council review → ratification.
How the island governs itself.
Contribution Process
External propagation — how an island proposes additions or changes to the shared Knowledge Islands model. How individual islands contribute to the archipelago.
How the island governs the commons.
Activities
The ongoing work that keeps an island alive — scheduled and conversational, required and optional.
An island that stops running its activities stops being a Knowledge Island. It becomes an archive. Activities are the tending — the regular, deliberate work of keeping knowledge current, healthy, and trustworthy.
Constitutional
Conformance
Verifies baseline conventions and adoption decisions. Non-negotiable — the island must be able to verify it is what it claims to be.
Tending
Audit · Health Check · Knowledge Rebuild
Scheduled — run on a cadence
Inbox Review · Asset Audit · Status Review
Conversational — judgment-heavy
Structural Audit · Wikilink Review · Convergence Check
Deep — periodic structural review
Briefings
Morning Briefing
Daily preparation: calendar review, task orientation, inbox state. Sets the agent in context for the day's work.

Agents
The operating patterns for each kind of agent — human and artificial.
The model defines operating conventions for each agent type — not just what they can do, but how they should behave, what constraints they operate under, and what authority they hold. The same island can be operated by different agents at different times, consistently.
Human
Full island membership. Ratification authority. Operates through editor interfaces and conversational AI. Source of meaning and values.
Claude
Primary AI agent. Accesses the island via MCP. Runs activities, assists with connection and curation, participates in governance drafting. Does not ratify.
ChatGPT
Secondary AI agent. Different capability profile; complementary role. Operates under equivalent constraints to Claude — island-specific operating instructions govern both.
Tools
The instruments through which agents operate — the technology layer that the model runs on.
The model is portable — it doesn't require specific tools. But the reference implementation (Arcadia) runs on a defined stack, which shapes the conventions and activities described above.

The Living Instance
Arcadia implements every part of this model.
From conventions and governance to activities and agent operating patterns — Arcadia is the canonical reference implementation. The model is not aspirational. It is working.
